What is a Conjunction?

A conjunction is a word that connects words or ideas. The most basic conjunctions are "and", "but", and

"or".

Let's talk about "AND"

AND

What do phones and chargers have in common? They connect right?

Imagine this:

You have a phone.

You also have a charger.

They are two separate things.

But when you connect them, your phone gets power!

The conjunction "and" works the same way in a sentence. It connects two ideas or words.

A few examples:

"I have a phone and a charger."

"I like coffee and tea."

"She is smart and kind."

"And" connects things that go together, just like a phone and charger, or socks and shoes!

Next up we have "BUT"

BUT

Everything was going fine… until something changed. That’s the job of ‘but’!

Imagine this:

You want to go outside,

but it’s raining.

These are two different ideas: one is what you want, the other is a problem.

The conjunction "but" shows contrast or an opposite idea.

A few examples:

"I want to go out but it’s raining."

"He is tall but slow."

"I like apples but not oranges."

So the word "But" connects two ideas that don’t fully agree. Like sunshine and rain.

Let’s talk about choices!

OR

let’s look at how ‘or’ gives us options.

Imagine this:

You open the fridge.

There’s juice and there’s milk.

You can only choose one.

The conjunction "or" gives you a choice between two things.

A few examples:

"Do you want juice or milk?"

"We can go out or stay home."

"Tea or coffee?"

Remember, "Or" connects options. Like picking between two drinks or two TV shows.

NOTE: Conjunctions are tiny words with big jobs. Check the pictures above for clarification.

Example

Direction: Read the following examples with your tutor
