What Is a Sentence?
Remember: A sentence is a group of words that gives a complete idea.
Example:
"I like music." → This gives a clear idea.
Now, let’s look at three basic types of sentences in English:
Positive Sentences (Say something is true)
These sentences tell us something. They are also called affirmative sentences.
Structure:
Subject + Verb + Object
Examples:
I like music.
She plays tennis.
They watch movies.
Tip: The verb changes with “he, she, it”
She plays, He eats, It runs
Negative Sentences (Say something is NOT true)
These sentences say no to something.
Structure:
Subject + don’t / doesn’t + base verb
Examples:
I don’t like dancing.
He doesn’t play football.
We don’t eat meat.
Use don’t with: I, you, we, they
I don’t, They don’t
Use doesn’t with: he, she, it
He doesn’t, She doesn’t
The verb goes back to the base form after don’t/doesn’t
Not: He doesn’t plays → He doesn’t play
Question Sentences (Ask something)
These are questions that want an answer: yes or no.
Structure:
Do / Does + Subject + Base Verb
Examples:
Do you like music?
Does she play the guitar?
Do they watch movies?
Use do with: I, you, we, they
Do you...? / Do they...?
Use does with: he, she, it
Does she...? / Does he...?
Like with negatives, the verb stays in base form
Not: Does she plays? → Does she play?
